PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR YOUR NEW PUPPY

Prior to your puppy's arrival it's a good idea to remove certain items from the reach of your puppy.  Take shoes, fluffy cushions, and throw pillows and put them in a puppy free room or closet.  Throw rugs that have fringe should be rolled up.  Taking these items out of the reach of your puppy will insure that they are not chewed up and also help to reduce unwanted accidents.  Also, tape down any loose wires.

Having designated areas set up for playing, sleeping, and feeding will make your puppy feel more comfortable.  Play areas are best if they are in a carpet-free area and should be in an enclosed room or gated area.  Toys can be kept in the play area.  Sleeping areas need to be in a quiet space or crate where the puppy can go to get away from any chaos, or to sleep.  A few toys in this area will also help the comfort level of your puppy.  The feeding area should ideally be near the play area or if your puppy is easily distracted then you can use the sleeping area or crate.

Don't forget to make the areas comfortable by placing flat mats, folded quilts, and old blankets down for your puppy to lie on.  Bones and chew toys are also great in the play and sleep areas.  Also, after meals be sure to pick up the puppy's bowls and wash thoroughly.
