FREQUENTLY ASKED PUPPY QUESTIONS
What breed of puppy
should I get? This will depend on what you are
looking for in a dog. Are you looking for a companion, a
running buddy, a guard dog, a dog to sit with you while you watch tv,
play with your children, etc.? Or is there a quality that you
don't want in a dog. What about the size of the
dog? After deciding on these things you'll want to look for a
breed that fits those desires. See the section on the
'Top 20
Breeds', which gives personality traits and characteristics
of the top
20 breeds.
Should I spay or neuter
my puppy? Unless you are planning on breeding
your dog then the answer is yes. Spaying a female will reduce
the chances of her getting tumors and developing breast
cancer. It will also eliminate unwanted
pregnancies. Neutering a male will reduce the chances of
prostate or testicular cancer and reduces the tendency for him to roam.
Where can I get a puppy?
Where you get your puppy from is almost as important of a decision as
which breed or mix-breed you choose. You can get a puppy from
a breeder, home breeder, shelter, or pet store. All can be
equally good choices but not all are created equal. It's best
to do as much research as possible prior to interviewing the adoption
agency and looking at their puppy choices. See the section on
'Where To Buy'
for more information.
Should I get one or two
puppies? This will all depend on how much time
you have, also the amount of patience as well. If you don't
have much of either it's better to stick with one puppy and then maybe
add another after a year or so. If you have lots of both keep
in mind how demanding it will be to housetrain both at the same time.
Should I get a male or
female puppy? If you are going to spay/neuter
your puppy then there will only be minor differences between
genders. A female will tend to be smaller then it's male
counterpart and won't have as strong of an urge to roam. Both
genders will be territorial so pick the puppy that has a personality
that fits your family.
How long do dogs usually
live? This will depend on the size, breed, and
over all care of the dog. The overall average is around 13
years. Keep in mind that within this average some breeds will
live several years less and some breeds several years more.
Larger dogs typically live shorter lives and smaller dogs longer
lives. The overall care of the dog will greatly affect its
life span as well.
